A gnome is a mythological creature and miniature spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced in the 16th century and later adopted by more recent authors including those of modern fantasy literature. Its characteristics have been reinterpreted to suit the needs of various storytellers, but it is typically said to be a small human that lives underground.
They resides in the pantry or barn and watches over the household and farm. Responsible for the care of the farm animals, especially the horses. The tomte or nisse has an enormous capacity for work but will not tolerate anyone’s interference. It is believed that a clean and orderly home or farm is an indication that this domestic sprite resides there.

Acrylic Yarn – We will only use acrylic yarn for the hair and beard.
Cotton Yarn – An assortment of colors in cotton yarn.
Amigurumi uses a small crochet hook to achieve a tight gauge that does not allow the stuffing to show through the fabric. Throughout the pattern I used a 2mm (2.25mm) crochet hook which is one size down from the recommend hook size for 4ply yarn, so if you choose to use DK #3 weight yarn I would recommend a 3mm hook and a 4mm if you choose to Worsted #4 weight yarn.

Brushed Yarn
Brushed yarn will not work with cotton yarn, instead use acrylic. To create a soft bushy beard or hair you will need a pet hairbrush. The pattern will tell you where and how much acrylic yarn to add to your gnome, you do not brush the yarn before it has been attached to the gnome, once attached the pattern will tell you when to start brushing the acrylic fibers. You may lose some fibers but that is to be expected, it can look a little scary at first but do not fret, the acrylic can take it. You do not need an expensive pet brush; I picked mine up at the local dollar store. I like the ones with the metal bristles and you want a small to medium size one.

How to read this e-book
There are 8 gnome designs, a Clover & Bramble for each season. Each chapter (season) will break down colors, yarn amounts, decorations and the order the steps should be followed in. It is important to note that you follow the steps as instructed. This is a no sew pattern which means there is no guess work on where to place your nose, shoes and arms, they are joined as you go to the main body.
